A group of property owners near the University will see the name of the street change in the next few months.
On Monday, council gave approval to change the name of Clydesdale Road to Academy Way - which is the name of the street that connected to Clydesdale in both directions.
City Planning Manager Ryan Smith says this isn't something staff like to do often, but it needed to be done.
"It can be quite confusing and it's very unpopular for those who have their road name changed, it's a bit of a pain. In this case, it was necessary to change the name of a short section of Academy, to accomodate some road construction that's occured over the last year," he said.
Originally, Clydesdale didn't fully connect to each side of Academy, and so the distinction was made to help with potential emergency response.
Smith says it's a pain to make this kind of a change, but it's better than doing nothing.
"An example of how it shouldn't be done is Hollywood Road, where in Kelowna, I can think of six different parts of Hollywood Road that aren't contiguous," he said.
"We've been saying for years that we're going to fix it, and only haven't because whenever you start approaching neighbours in those areas, they start to think 'well, don't change mine, change theirs.'"
Because the name change happened to accomodate the University South development, Smith says it's the developer's responsibility to cover people's costs.
"They're responsible for compensating the impacted property owners, for notifying the impacted property owners, and for sort of being the go-between the city and those property owners," he said.
"We will work with the developer to send out letters to those property owners. Give them a little bit of notice, probably 60 days notice that it will change, and work with Canada Post on those changes."
He says once Canada Post gets on board with the changes, online apps like Google Maps should follow shortly afterwards.
