An agreement between the city and a local developer that's been in the works since 2015 is moving ahead.
On Monday, council gave its first approval on a project that would combine a 2200-square-foot strip mall with a couple of heritage buildings on the Surtees homestead in the Mission.
Mayor Colin Basran says another key part is the city agreeing to build a new roundabout beside the property, at Lakeshore and Collett Road.
"The fact that we will now be addressing a very dangerous intersection in our community, not to mention the fact that hopefully, it will have some services in there, as well as with new development across the street, where people in the area will be driving less, and not as far into town. Which helps alleviate some traffic congestion issues," he said.
The Surtees homestead and barn are currently falling apart, and would be restored by the Worman developers.
In exchange, the city would offer a 75-year lease on the land.
Councillor Charlie Hodge says he thinks it's a good mix of old and new.
"This really is part of our heritage, and I'm very excited to see this project come forward. I'd like to see it done yesterday, and I'm looking forward to what can happen," he said.
"I think it's going to be very exciting for that end of town, and for the family involved. So I think it's a win-win - got my support."
Basran added that after taking a few years to come forward, he thinks the wait will be worth it.
"There are a whole host of positives in regards to moving this project forward. So, happy to see it. I know it's been some time that it's taken the applicant and staff to work through this, but I think the end result is going to be something very fantastic for our community."
The plans were already brought forward to the city's Heritage Advisory Committee, which gave its endorsement to the design.
They'll now move ahead to a public hearing in the coming weeks.
