The United Steelworkers Union has served 72 hour strike notice on the Tolko Industries sawmill in Kelowna as well as other forest products operations in the Southern Okanagan. The union represents 980 workers in Kelowna and close to 2500 workers in the Southern Interior.
Don't expect any job action in the near future because the union has applied for mediation. No dates have yet been set.
Steelworkers President Pat McGregor says there can be no walkout or lockout while mediation talks are on going, but if unsuccessful, then the union asks the mediator to leave the table and job action would likely follow.
99 percent of Kelowna union members voted in favour of a strike.
