The Kelowna Fire Department had a busy Tuesday morning.
Shortly before 11:00 AM, fire crews arrived at a house on Dougal Road South to find smoke and flames coming from the second floor.
They were able to knock that fire down quickly, and prevent it from spreading to other levels of the house.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a grease fire that spread to the kitchen cabinets.
All occupants, one adult, one teenager, and two cats, got out safely before crews arrived. Due to the damage, they'll be unable to stay at that residence for the time being, but are currently in the care of Emergency Support Services.
Several hours earlier, around 5:00 AM, crews responded to a house fire on the corner of Mallach Road and Highway 33, which had gutted the house and caused some major exterior damage as well.
As of 8:30 AM, that fire had been put out, but some firefighters remained on scene to mop up and investigate. At this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
A resident in the area said that the house had been unoccupied for several months.
The Kelowna Fire Department is reminding residents to check their smoke detectors regularly to make sure that they're working properly.
