Graduate students will be staffing a new, low-barrier drug and alcohol addictions service at UBCO’s Psychology Clinic.
“The clinic will fill a crucial gap in the community for people who want to cut down or quit their use of alcohol and other drugs, but who don’t feel they are a good match for residential treatment or inpatient detox,” says psychologist Zach Walsh, who will be directing the clinic. “We will be using state-of-the-art treatments to address alcohol and drug problems from a harm-reduction perspective.”
To help clients reach their goals, students will be using methods such as cognitive behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing.
With accessibility in mind, the clinic charges clients on a sliding scale, based on their income.
The clinic will not be available for crisis or emergency services.
