A wildfire is currently burning in Lake Country in Okanagan Centre.
Bruce Smith at the Emergency Operations Centre says it began at around 4:30 pm Saturday on Okanagan Centre Road West and 14th Street.
Smith says at last report the fire was 20 hectares in size and is being worked on by "crews from the District of Lake Country, as well as fire departments from Kelowna, West Kelowna, Peachland, Ellison and Joe Rich. BC Wildfire Service is providing some ground and aerial support with fixed wing aircraft and helicopters."
Smith says RCMP went door-to-door and evacuated properties in the area - but they don't have a firm number on how many - it could be at least 100 - and he says officials have not been able to confirm reports of up to 10 homes being lost.
An Emergency Support Services reception centre is open at Kelowna's Salvation Army on Sutherland Avenue.
Smith says avoid Okanagan Centre Road West, Tyndall Road, Camp Road, and Long Road areas - vehicles are also being stopped on Glenmore Road at the landfill heading to Lake Country.
