Fire investigators are treating a wildfire that broke out on the side of Highway 33 early this afternoon as suspicious.
It started as a grass fire at around 1:30pm near Brentwood Road before quickly growing to approximately 2 hectares in size.
“It’s suspicious because of its location and how it spread,” says Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Captain Kelly Stephens “It looked like it started on the side of the road.”
Over 25 local firefighters, 6 BC wildfire crews and a helicopter responded to the fire.
Stephens says dry conditions led to its fast growth.
“When you see any pictures of it you can see that it’s just dry, bone, bone, dry, so thank god we didn’t have any wind driven fire aspects, or trees or houses,” he said “This is basically best case scenario.”
Fire fighters cut a guard around the fire to get it under control and crews will remain on scene for the next several hours to put out any hot spots.
No structures were threatened by the fire.
