Residents and staff at the Dorchester Retirement Community on Leon Avenue in Kelowna have been dealing with the effects of water damage in the building since mid-January, and repairs are still ongoing.
Dozens of suites have been affected, and residents in those suites have been temporarily relocated to vacant suites in the building while the drywall is replaced and suites are dried out.
Regional Director of Operations for Revera Living Retirement Graham Freeman says the extent damage, caused by melted snow creeping into the building, makes it difficult to come up with a timetable for the resumption of normal facility's operations.
"I think it's really disruptive," says Freeman. "No one likes to see this thing. Residents spend a lot of time in the residence and so I think that trying to have programming and some ideas to get them involved in areas that they may not be spending time has been a bit of a challenge."
In the meantime, a catering company has been on hand, serving three meals a day to residents, until the kitchen and dining room re-open around late March.
Freeman says Revera Living Retirement have not received complaints from residents about inadequate food service.
