The City of West Kelowna will begin accepting pot shop applications from October 17th to January 2nd.
The first step for applicants will be to submit their applications to the Province, while the City won't be reviewing them until after the deadline in the new year.
The cost just to apply will be high - interested applicants have to pay a $7,500 rezoning amendment fee up front.
If City staff informs the applicants that their application isn't looking to strong ahead of being presented to Council, they'll have the option to withdraw their application, and could receive a 50 percent refund of their fee.
General Manager of Development Services Nancy Henderson says the City expects a tight competition between applicants, since they've put a cap on the number of pot shops they'll allow.
"We have some paremeters in our policy; we're looking at approving four stores in West Kelowna," says Henderson. "Two would be Westbank Centre, and two would be in the Boucherie Business Park area."
Henderson says she anticipates between 10 and 15 applications to come in.
Once marijuana is legalized, the City will make it illegal to smoke or vape it in public, much the same as alcohol.
