No one expects a stray bullet to ricochet through a bedroom window, but there's no bylaws currently preventing that from happening in West Kelowna.
Former Mayor and current councillor, Doug Findlater, brought this concern to city council earlier this month.
“The one exception is a bylaw that we inherited from the regional district when we were completely rural area that prohibited the discharge of firearms and bows in regional district parks but nothing in any other public space or private land,” said Findlater.
He said people should not have the freedom to discharge weapons freely in urban communities.
“I certainly appreciate that there are rural properties and agricultural properties were firearms may be an appropriate tool to use but I don’t think it’s appropriate in neighbourhoods or residential, or commercial or industrial areas for somebody to be doing target practice.”
Earlier this month, council agreed to look into creating a bylaw that bans the use of firearms and bows on private property.
Findlater expects council to land on bylaws similar to those in neighbouring municipalities.
