An updated plan on the way communities across the Central Okanagan collect garbage is being pursued by the Regional District.
The last Solid Waste Management Plan was adopted in 2006, so efficiencies are being sought in the amount of waste that people are consuming.
A report to West Kelowna council says there are 12 different changes being considered as it relates to curbside pick-up, which include possibly picking up recycling every week, and dialing garbage back to every other week, to encourage better habits.
Another big one would be the adoption of a user pay system, where homeowners would pay for the specific amount of garbage thrown out, and not the same flat rate as everyone else.
The report says the garbage bins already have ID tags that would make that a possibility.
Other considerations were for more frequent yard waste pick-ups, and including more things in recycling bins, such as styrofoam and plastic bags.
Right now, the total amount of garbage sent to landfill is aboutt 681 kg per person, per year, which the RDCO wants to see dialed back to 600 kg by 2022.
At this point, officials have consulted with people across the Okanagan, at in-person meetings and in telephone and online surveys.
