West Kelowna council turned down a request to build a massive lakefront home at its meeting this week.
The request came on behalf of ex-NHL'er Rene Bourque, who wanted to build a home on Jennens Road - 2.6 metres higher than the 9 metre height limit.
Councillor Rosalind Neis voted in favour of the project, saying the area has a low enough density to accomodate the big house..
"I think it's great. I mean, for people that are in a comfortable position that want this lifestyle, I don't see how this is a detrimant, in a large way, to anyone," she said.
Councillor Bryden Winsby says he wasn't convinced the project should get an exception..
"We have these regulations in place for a reason. If we vary as much as this request would have us do, we might as well get rid of the restrictions and just simply ask the neighbours everytime a home is proposed - 'well, you ok with this?' And then approve it or not approve it," he said.
"No. I don't think it works that way. We're trying basically to put a square peg in a round hole."
Along with a other letters both for and against the project, Bourque got a letter of support from Blackhawks defenceman Brent Seabrook, who also lives on Jennens Road, but in the end could not sway council's decision.
