Interior Health is warning residents of the increase risk of West Nile virus.
The disease is spread from birds to human's through mosquito bites.
"Some people who are affected will get a serious illness that can include inflammation of the brain or inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord or even paralysis. Some people can be left with a long lasting disability."
Interior Health's Leah Feist says West Nile was first detected in the South Okanagan during the summer of 2009.
The best way to prevent it is to wear protective clothing, avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn and use mosquito repellent.
