The BC Wildfire service says there are more fires this year, compared to 2017, but most are smaller in size burning fewer hectares.
Fire Information Officer Marla Catherall, at the Kamloops Fire Centre, says since April 1st - crews have responded to 376 fires and "76 of those are still currently active, and in total we have had 36,100 hectares that have been burned in the Kamloops Fire Centre."
Looking back at 2017 - the worst year for wildfires in BC history - over 1,300 fires burned more than 1.2 million hectares between April and November.
Catherall says the Munro Lake fire near Peachland - and blaze near Kelowna, in Okanagan Mountain Park, are considered under control - while the Bear Paw Creek fire, 16-kilometes west of Summerland, which sparked up last Friday is about 5-hectares in size and is 100% guarded.
Meantime, Fire Information Officer Steve Kada, who's been working at the Gottfriedson Mountain fire, west of West Kelowna, has some good news.
"It's at the state where we can safely call it under control. We have crews being assisted by the Canadian Forces out there consolidating containment lines, patrolling, and mopping up hot spots - and we expect that operation to continue in the coming days," he says.
Kada says the Gottfriedson Mountain fire is currently 633 hectares in size - and an evacuation alert has been lifted - there's no longer a threat to life and properties in the area.
