It was a record-breaking fire season in BC in 2018 - and some of those fires from last summer could still be burning.
BC Wildfire Service spokesperson Forrest Tower says given the intensity of many fires last summer - hot spots could flare up with the arrival of warmer and drier weather this spring.
"The visual sign is going to be smoke. If there's obviously smoke where it shouldn't be - that's going to be the number one sign. As well, if you're within the fire perimeter, pay attention if you're going off the forest service road; know that there maybe the potential for some areas that totally haven't extinguished yet," he says.
Tower says overwintering fires are normal - they burn under the surface of the soil, and smoulder all winter.
He says there hasn't been an increase in reports of these types of fires so far.
Tower says if you see smoke or flames in an area where a fire has gone through - call STAR-55-55 - and report it to BC Wildfire.
