A Winnipeg man who took part in a violent Kelowna home invasion in 2015 has been sentenced to 4 years in jail.
Alexander Laramee was 20 years old when he and another man broke into a unit in the Verve apartment on Glenmore Road to steal money from a safe.
The homeowner was hit in the head with a hammer by Laramee's accomplice and Laramee punched and confined two women during the invasion.
The robbery went south when a fish tank was broken, sending water all over the unit and alerting downstairs neighbors.
Laramee’s accomplice fled and Laramee was arrested.
He was found guilty of several charges including break and enter, assault, and confinement in July and was sentenced on Tuesday.
The defence had asked for a sentence of time served because Laramee, who doesn’t have a previous criminal conviction, didn't plan the robbery and didn't know his accomplice brought the hammer.
The crown asked for a sentence of 7 to 9 years in jail because of the physical harm done to the victims, particularly the homeowner who needed stitches and has a permanent bump on the top of his head from being hit by the hammer.
With credit for time served, Laramee will spend another 3.5 years in jail.
