Women Deliver 2019. It's the largest conference on gender equality ever. It's on right now in Vancouver.
Conservative Deputy House Leader Lisa Raitt is a delegate. She says that gender equality is an issue everywhere.
"We heard that 40 percent of Ethiopian girls under 18 are child brides. That's a stunning statistic that simply doesn't happen in Canada. It's somethign their president wants to combat. So we have to be cognizant of the issues around the world and empower people to go back to their home countries and get on with the changes they need to make in order to bring women into equality."
Raitt says Canada has to take care of its own issues such as the recommendations made yesterday in the report on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Over 200 recommendations must be studied and a plan devised, with First Nations, to change history.
Raitt says the Women Deliver 2019 conference has 165 countries represented with over 6000 delegates.
