Kelowna International Airport is holding a grand opening this afternoon of it's revamped outgoing baggage facility. Close to 36,000 square feet of space has seen either renovations, or new builds.
It means the airport will now have the capacity of up to 900 outgoing bags per hour. I steep increase from the 350 they were running before.
Much of the upgrades are behind the scenes with screeners, baggage handlers and airline staff.
Airport Director, Sam Samaddar says, "It was a very very complicated construction project because we had to build some new space in and around the old system, keep the old system...some of it was running on the new side, some on the old side." "We've had parts of the system running for a year, year and a half." "The feedback has been very very positive."
It's expected the upgrades will keep the outgoing baggage process up to date until at least the year 2045.
