Cyber security issue causes school district to shut down E-mail

Central Okanagan Public Schools (SD23) says it discovered a breach of several district Gmail accounts and has temporarily shut down student and staff access. SD23 also says its District privacy and cybersecurity team is working to investigate the cause and secure the system before restoring access to services.

The District revealed personal information that may have been exposed is users’ usual first and usual last name,
along with district Gmail addresses.

SD23 believes four accounts were identified as compromised and used to send a phishing email to other students and staff with a link to a form requesting more information to apply for a job opportunity.

The District says it has notified the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia about the situation. SD23 says further updates will be provided to families and staff directly.
