The city and Costco are still trying to work out the details of the store's proposed move to Leckie and Baron.
Ron Ready lives in the area. He's met with city staff to talk about the move.
"I had meeting with Ryan Smith (Divisional Director of Planning and Development Services) and apparently there seems to be a lot of controversy between the two outfits," says Ready. "It seems to be related to traffic congestion. It's my opinion there is a difference of opinions between the city and Costco as to what is required if this goes ahead."
Ready has first had experience with this type of development. He used to work in the community planning department at the City of Kelowna.
"Hopefully the mayor and council listen to their planning staff," he says. "What it's done with the people in the neighbourhood here, they're going around saying it's all been done. The city is just going to "red stamp" this project. They're pro development and it's all about money, not about good planning. That's the impression we're getting from where this process has gone to this point."
One of biggest concerns residents have is traffic congestion.
"With the existing Costco location, they have access from not only Highway 97 but from Highway 33, which are major highway corridors," says Ready. "Which we don't have in this area over here. We've got Springfield and Baron Road, and Baron Road is already overloaded with the existing Costco. And then they want to build a new one in our neighbourhood which is 20-percent larger, and it's going to add that much more traffic."
When contacted by AM 1150 News, a Costco representative said "the company does not comment on projects currently under development."
