West Kelowna RCMP have teamed up with the West Kelowna Fire Rescue to investigate a handful of fires on Mount Boucherie on Monday.
RCMP Corporal Jesse O'Donaghey says some parts have become clear.
"Police arrived on scene as firefighters of the West Kelowna Fire Rescue were actively working to extinguish several small fires along a hiking trail. Preliminary examination of that scene suggested that the fires were human-caused, and that they were believed to be deliberately set," he said.
He says police were called just after 5 pm to the trail above Ponderosa Road, and have recovered evidence from the scene that points to arson.
"Specially trained fire investigators performed a full examination of that scene, and police now confirm that it appears as though a total of six separate fire set locations were discovered, and five of those required firefighters to actively extinguish those fires."
A man was arrested near the trail above Ponderosa Road shortly after 5, and was also released on Monday, but remains as a person of interest.
Four other witnesses talked to officers once they got there, but left before police got their contact information.
The RCMP is asking those four, and anyone else who was in the area at the time, to contact them for a follow-up.
